Belkyra® is approved by Health Canada for the reduction of submental fat (double chin). The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally found in the human body. When injected into the submental fat, it causes destruction of the adipose (fat) cells. These cells are then gradually eliminated by the body, naturally and permanently.
Intervention
The intervention takes place in Dr Thibaudeau’s office and takes 20-30 minutes. Local anesthesia can be administered to improve comfort. Minor bruising may occur at injection sites, and it is normal to experience swelling for a few days after the treatment. Results are visible after a few weeks. In general, 2 to 6 treatments are required to achieve desired results.
Consultation process
Dr Thibaudeau will examine your face and neck to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Pre-treatment photographs will be taken by a member of our staff.
The treatment can take place at the same time as the consultation if there are no contra-indications (see below).
Injection process
Treatment consists of marking the area and followed by 15-30 injections, depending on surface area. Local anesthesia (lidocaine) can be administered in some cases.
Preparation
Any anticoagulant medication (Aspirin, Coumadin…) should be withheld for 10 days, as well as any natural product that could thin the blood.
For men, the beard should be trimmed or shaved to facilitate examination, markings and injections.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- Known allergy to a drug ingredient;
- Prior submental surgery;
- Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, local pain and numbing in the treated area. Nerve injury causing mouth asymmetry or dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) is extremely rare but can occur. Side effects are usually described by patients as mild to moderate.
Recovery process
The injected area can present redness for 30-60 minutes after the procedure. Neck swelling is expected and can be impressive; it indicates that the injections are working. Swelling can last a few days. Bruising can occur and also last for a few days.
You should restrain from heavy physical activity and alcohol consumption for 24 hours after the treatment.
